Photos from Al-Shifa hospital, Gaza City

Norwegian doctors Mads Gilbert and Erik Fosse have been working in Gaza’a main hospital during Israel’s assault on the Palestinian enclave. See their Special Report on Gaza in the Jan 17 issue, where they describe the unfolding crisis and conditions at Al-Shifa hospital, and view their accompanying photos here.

  1. Helio Plapler Says:

    Dear sires,

I would like to make some remarks about this issue.

1- These photos show a (heavy) duty in a war zone hospital and looks like the patients are being well assisted under possible conditions.
2- I don’t see any photos showing israeli (and even palestinian) children being assisted (as they are) in cities like Sderot, which were attacked by Hamas.
3- I didn’t see any comments about the money sent to palestinian liders to built and mantain there hospitals to be used to buy weapons instead.
4- The Lancet should keep an eye solely on medical issues; this one looks more like political propaganda.
    Thank you.

  2. yo masa Says:

show the battered children of israel after they have been bombed 3000 times!

  3. Dr Rodney Zentner Says:

It is truly distressing to see pictures of children in Gaza injured during the current fighting. However it is disturbing that the Lancet only shows one side of the story. That is a great way to increase antisemitism in the world, and unbefitting a medical journal.
It is a fact that Hamas aims to kill innocent civilians while Israel tries, under very difficult circumstances, to protect them. It is a fact that Hamas uses civilians as human shields, stores explosives and ammunition in mosques and private homes, fires rockets towards Israeli towns and villages from within densely populated areas and schools, and even uses ambulances to transport weapons and terrorists. It is said that the leaders of the Hamas terrorist organization are hiding in bunkers and tunnels under the Shifa Hospital.
For eight years, yes, eight years Hamas has been firing rockets at civilian targets in Israel. Israel has every right to defend itself. It is amazing that it waited so long before taking action.
What a pity innocent civilians on both sides need to suffer. As one retired USA army officer said last week,”Israel hasn’t killed or injured one civilian in Gaza. Hamas has.”

  4. Muhammad Ibrahim Says:

I just would like to thank you for this nice coverage.

  5. Shahin Shahin Says:

Let us do something for the children in Gaza, let us help them here in the US, I have done it with the Iraqi children, can we do the same for Gaza children?

  6. Gavin Young Says:

    Dear Sirs,

It seems that Dr Rodney Zentner doesn’t seem to know that new weapons were used on the people of Gaza as well as white phosphorus (in violation of international law) and were used to demolish UN facilities. He doesn’t seem to understand that 1.5 million people are being blockaded; further impoverished. He doesn’t seem to understand 1) disproportionality and 2) the immorality of targeting civilians.

Dr. Zetner, imagine you’re in a crowd of bystanders and the police want to open fire on fleeing suspects running through your crowd. Would you so happily agree? Next, Dr. Zetner, imagine there’s a gang in your neighborhood causing a lot of trouble, would you want to go tell them to stop?

Dr. Zetner, it doesn’t increase antisemitism in the world to condemn the actions of a democratic nation’s military. I greatly respect Jewish people, but I rightfully despise the IDF for killing so many people in such a horrific way. I expected more humanity from a democratic nation’s military.

“That is a great way to increase antisemitism in the world, and unbefitting a medical journal”

We are not showing the world how the Israelis are killing children and women. We are not showing the israeli phosphorus Bombes falling on Gaza and killing every thing. We just show these pictures becasue we need medicical help

  8. Alava Hillbrooke Says:

To Helio Plapler. I also would like to make some remarks.
    1. These photos are considerably mild compared to the many photos and videos you can find online that show conditions much, much worse. These patients are the lucky ones who made it to the operating room alive…
    2. You don’t see photos of injured or dead israeli children because there aren’t many.
23 deaths in Israel caused by Qassam rockets since November 28, 2001.
    of which,
5 (FIVE) are children, IN A PERIOD OF SEVEN YEARS

428 children (at least) killed by Israel in the last 21 days. That’s an average of 20 children
killed per day. If Gaza had killed 20 children per day during these SEVEN YEARS, it would have
    killed :
51,100 israeli children. Just trying to illustrate a point.
    SOURCE: http://zionism-israel.com/vic/Sderot_Qassam_Statistics_Aug_2006.htm – (Adapted
from Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs Source ). From the horse’s mouth…

3 and 4. The Lancet is a MEDICAL publication. Two DOCTORS were working at a GAZA
HOSPITAL. They ARE keeping an eye solely on medical issues.
YOU, on the other hand, are talking about money, weapons and political propaganda.

To yo masa. Exactly : show them!!! where are they, where is the destruction?

T Dr. Rodney Zentner. any part of the article a lie? I am apalled at how cheaply israel issues the charge of antisemitism.

“Hamas uses civilians as shields, stores explosives and ammunition in mosques and private homes, fires rockets towards Israeli towns and villages from within densely populated areas and schools, and even uses ambulances to transport weapons and terrorists. It is said that the leaders of the Hamas terrorist organization are hiding in bunkers and tunnels under the Shifa Hospital.”

Israel uses civilians as shields. Documented. Israel kills 1300 in Gaza and then has pizza.

Even if all that’s said about Hamas were true -which it isn’t- what do you expect them to do? That piece of land is highly populated, and has been sieged for years. Deprived of just about everything by Israel’s blockade, I too would fire and hide from wherever I could. Duh!

For the three above: If you do research, even based on israeli sources only, you will find much that contradicts the israeli narrative. Bring a pragmatic perspective to it:

Gaza destroyed house for israel destroyed house
Gaza destroyed fields for israel destroyed fields
    Gaza dead for israelis dead
Gaza ceasefire for israel ceasefire, etc.

The information is there. Go do your homework and be honest with yourself, if you can.

  9. Jon Rohde, MD Says:

This is clearly crimes against humanity. the reasons your commentators did not see such pictures from Sderot is that such atrocities did not happen there. While hundreds of Gaza children were killed and thousands maimed by the purposeful actions of the Israeli state army, a few in Israel were hit – admittedly an outrage as well. However, nothing can justify the horrors perpetrated by the Israeli army on the innocent civilians of Gaza. Hopefully, the International Court of Justice will condemn this crime against humanity.

  10. Abdul Hafiz Says:

    Dear SIr/Madam
Salute to your bravery and commitment to humanity. Though it may not immediately cure the “white phosphorus burns ” of the victim of this illegal war, on one of the most oppressed people in the world. I hope good people from every corner of the world would come-up to avoid such acts of crimes in future.
I congratulate you for the publication of the plight of these childeren, its a genuine global health issue !
I request all to speak for Justice with this verse from Quran-
O ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well- acquainted with all that ye do. (Quran 4:135)

    Thank you and best wishes

    Abdul Hafiz

  11. Abdul Hafiz Says:

    Dear Sir/madam
I admire the courage and commitment of Doctors and the health staff in Gaza for their service to humanity. I admire you too for the giving voice to the oppressed. And I hope we all will learn from our mistakes and will work to avoid such silly mistakes in future for the sake of Justice.
I feel now the most urgent need is to ensure supplies of food, medicines, clothes etc to these people, so that none of the wounded die dur to shortage of supplies. Hopefully the ‘world leaders’ will make genuine efforts in this regard.

    Regards
    Abdul Hafiz

  12. Allam Dalati Says:

    Thank you,
